I already knew that there were harsh chemicals in traditional hair dye products, but I was surprised learn just how many! It really is a chemical swamp that we’re rubbing onto our heads!
What Do These Chemicals Do?
We all have melanin which determines the natural color/pigmentation of our hair. When we dye our hair using traditional products, these chemicals pentrate deep into the hair shaft and change the structure and color of your hair by altering the melanin.
It is perxoide and ammonia that cause the cuticle to swell, which then allows the dye to penetrate and change the color of your hair. The ammonia then opens up the hair shaft (or cuticle) so that the chemical can penetrate the cortex of the hair. But these are just a few of the chemicals that we’ve been grinding into our scalps to look gorgeous, ladies. Guess how many others there are?
So how many chemicals are in chemical hair dye? *DRUM ROLL*…
According to the National Cancer Institute, chemical hair dyes contain up to 5,000 other ingredients, some of which are known carcinogens! Once I learned this fact, I swore I would never use chemical hair dyes again.
Fortunately, there’s a natural solution. We can decide to use naturally derived plant based hair dyes such as henna. By using henna hair dye, you are preserving the integrity and health of your hair. You won’t be absorbing chemical toxins and damaging your hair or scalp! I’ve done my homework, and the best company to buy henna hair dye from is Morrocco Method International.
Here’s a photo from a real Morrocco Method customer. As you can see, henna looks as good (or better) than the chemical soup variety of hair dyes:
