Nowadays, more and more people are choosing sulfate free shampoo products. Just take a look down the personal products aisle in a store and you will see many shampoo bottles marked as being “SLS Free”.
Even though sulfate free shampoo is becoming more commonly available at retail stores, stylists from salons still use this detail to market and promote their shampoo products. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but if you’re on a budget, shop around!
So What is SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)?
SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate is an affordable yet powerful grease-reducing detergent that is also very helpful for making things “foamy”. You know how we love shampoo lather? It just feels so cleansing and refreshing? Yeah, that’s typically thanks to SLS!
So, What’s Wrong With That?
However, adding SLS to shampoos may not be a good thing. Although people would also want their shampoos to produce bubbles as much as possible, sulfate can cause skin and scalp irritation. This is the reason why it makes a lot of pain if ever shampoo enters the eye. This pain and irritation is typically caused by the sulfate. In addition to this, the SLS can also lead to hair follicle damage. Once the follicles are damaged, it can lead to weakened hair structure and reduced hair growth. It is no wonder why people are already using non-sulfate containing shampoos.
In addition to these findings, there are also studies that associate sodium lauryl sulfate to the development of several health problems including cancer, skin problems, and damage to the immune system. Despite the presence of these studies, there is still no hard evidence that can support idea that sulfate is indeed related to cancer growth. This is the reason why it is not yet banned by the FDA or categorized as an unhealthy ingredient or substance.
Despite the lack of proof about the hazards of sulfate to health, a lot of shampoo manufacturers are already searching for healthier alternatives to provide better satisfaction and health to their consumers. This is the reason why there are already shampoos that do not foam up as much as the ordinary hair cleansing products that contain SLS. Because of this, most users would also consume more shampoo just to get the ideal amount of bubbles or foam that they desire. This may be a little expensive for the buyers; however, using sulfate free shampoos can provide quality health to hair and scalp. This is something that consumers should consider very well consider in choosing the right type of shampoo to buy.
